Interview with Gauthier Ricord: Reflections on the MEDEF International mission to Georgia

The CCIFG had the pleasure of welcoming to Tbilisi the mission led by the France-Caucasus Business Council of MEDEF International last February.

During this interview, Gauthier Ricord, President of the France-Caucasus Business Council, reflects on the objectives of this visit and provides an assessment that points to promising economic prospects between France and Georgia.

1. In what context does the revival of this initiative take place?

The revival of this mission comes within a context of renewed interest in the Caucasus region, which MEDEF International follows closely and in which it has been historically engaged. MEDEF International has indeed always been active in Georgia since its independence, supporting French companies in their development in this market. The previous mission took place in 2021, reflecting the continuity of this commitment.

Today, the region is undergoing significant developments, particularly with the prospects opened by the peace agreement announced last August between Azerbaijan and Armenia, which contribute to strengthening the outlook for stability in the Caucasus. Furthermore, the region is gaining increasing strategic importance at the heart of major connectivity corridors between Europe and Asia, particularly within the framework of the development of the “Middle Corridor.” It is therefore in this context of openness, connectivity, and economic opportunity that we sought to relaunch a mission of French companies to the country, in order to support this momentum and position our companies on upcoming structuring projects.

2. What were the main objectives of this business mission to Georgia?

This mission pursued several complementary objectives. On the one hand, it aimed to raise awareness among French companies of the opportunities offered by the Georgian market, particularly in key sectors such as infrastructure, energy, transport, and engineering. On the other hand, the mission sought to facilitate meetings between French companies and Georgian economic stakeholders, both public and private, in order to create concrete partnerships. Finally, it aimed to strengthen institutional dialogue and gain a better understanding of the economic priorities of the Georgian authorities, in order to align French expertise with the country’s needs.

3. What types of opportunities can this mission open up for French companies?

This mission opens up several types of opportunities. First, it provides privileged access to major structuring projects, particularly in the areas of transport infrastructure, energy transition, and urban development. It also facilitates the identification of reliable local partners, which is essential for successful market entry or sustainable business development. Moreover, Georgia offers a competitive business environment and a strategic position as a regional hub toward the Caucasus and Central Asia. French companies can therefore use this market as a gateway to broader regions.

4. How do you see economic cooperation between France and Georgia evolving?

I am resolutely optimistic about the evolution of economic cooperation between France and Georgia. We are observing a growing convergence of interests, particularly around infrastructure modernization within the framework of major corridor development, energy transition, and sustainable development. France has recognized expertise in these areas, which fully aligns with Georgia’s development ambitions. In the coming years, this cooperation is expected to become more structured, while the strengthening of institutional ties and the role of business networks will also be key in supporting this dynamic.

5. What is the current role and real influence of the CCIFG?

The CCIFG now plays a central role in the Franco-Georgian economic ecosystem, in close complementarity with MEDEF International. These two structures are partners and operate in a complementary manner: MEDEF International helps drive a collective dynamic, structure economic dialogue, and support companies in their international expansion, while the CCIFG provides essential on-the-ground operational expertise. Beyond its networking function, the CCIFG acts as a project catalyst. It supports French companies in understanding the local market, facilitates their establishment, and helps secure their initiatives thanks to its in-depth knowledge of the field.
